Our Top 5 Things to do in Naxos
Our first stop on our Cyclades adventure. Naxos is a beautiful island with so much to do and see. Here’s 5 of our favourite things to do…
1. Climb Mount Zas
The summit of Mount Zas is the highest point in the Cyclades at 1000m above sea level. The hike is moderately difficult mostly due to the heat and it took us 1.5 hours to get to the top from the church.
The panoramic views over the neighbouring islands make it all worth it, if you are into geocaching there is apparently one at the top – but we couldn’t find it!
Get the bus from Naxos town and get off near Agia Marina, follow the sign posts from there! We walked back following a walking route to Filoti for lunch afterwards, which has a good selection of traditional restaurants. (Lots of Greek salads for veggies!).
2. Mikri Vigla Beach
We got a taxi to this beach from Naxos town for 25 Euros, you can get the bus easily (which we did on the way back), if your not hungover like we were! It has clear blue sea and great sand and is wide enough for you to have your own space even if it is busy. Best beach on the island. Click here for our blog on the best beaches in the Cyclades.
3. Rent Bicycles and Explore
We rented our bikes from Naxos moto rent which is near Nikos’ Taverna and they were only 6 Euros per day each including helmets, an absolute bargain! You could also rent a scooter here for 15 Euros if you want to go a bit further. The roads are not particularly busy and we cycled to Agios Prokopios Beach which was really nice and only took about 30 minutes from Naxos town. Well worth the trip. You do not need to return the bikes until 8pm so you can a full day out.
4. Go Out Out!
Naxos is one of the busiest islands we visited and wondering up the narrow cobbled streets, hopping from bar to bar is a great way to spend at least one of your evenings here. If your on a budget, cocktails can be a bit expensive but if you start out at the Diogenis Café you can get delicious cocktails for 5 Euros. We got home about 4am, so cancel your plans for the next morning!
5. Go and See the Donut Man
For a delicious but cheap desert, served by the loveliest man in Naxos head to Loukoumades (Donut shop) and get a plate with your choice of sauce. It is a tiny little shop on the waterfront in Naxos town. Be sure to pay him a visit for a 4 Euro donut plate served with a big smile!
